The County Longford town of Ballymahon, on the River Inny, is located north east of Athlone. Results from races held in the town were first recorded in the Racing Calendar in 1770 when a five day meeting spread over six days began on Monday 30th July with a four mile Purse which was won by Lord Westport’s Brown Jack. The next day the 4 year old Stakes went to Semiramis, while the Hunters Stakes was claimed by Mr Kelly’s Pioneer. The concluding race on the final day of the festival, Saturday 4th August, was won by Mr Newcomen’s Sharper. |
